Shopping for plus size wedding dresses shouldn't cause more stress and exhaustion. All brides want to look their best on their wedding day. And with a lot of attention being paid to the wedding dresses, it's understood that a great deal of time and effort needs to be devoted to searching that perfect gown. Plus size wedding dresses are not regular gowns like beach wedding dresses. Finding your dream bridal gown shouldn't be frustrating. Instead it should be a lot of fun!

With Summer once again approaching, thoughts turn to sorting out that Summer wardrobe and replacing thick knits and jeans with lighter, airier colors, fabrics and cuts.

For plus size women, the fun of shopping has increased dramatically in recent years with a wide range of retailers now recognizing that nearly 50% of the population is at least a size 16, and finally catering for plus sizes with ranges of fun and fashionable clothing.


The trick with picking plus size clothing is to avoid hiding your shape. Attempting to hide away under baggy or shapeless items will merely make you look larger, and probably feel less confident. Instead, focus on working those curves! Fashion is increasingly about celebrating voluptuous lines and recognizing that curvy women are beautiful - just look at the recent fashion campaigns by Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and Etam all featuring beautiful plus size models.

Pick your favorite body part and dress to accentuate it. For example you may have a wonderful cleavage - in which case don't be afraid to display it with plunging v-lines and detailed necklines. If you have great calves - and many larger women do - then again, show them off with crop trousers or skirts and dresses. Trim arms and ankles can be shown off with short sleeves and shorter Summer lengths again - and remember to nip in that waist with a belt or tie to create a stunning hourglass shape. Clothes should skim your figure - not drown it, and remember that foundation underwear is one of the main things to get right - a well fitting bra and some controlling knickers will make all of your outfits look fantastic!

Summer dresses are a wonderful option for the warmer months. For plus size women, pick empire necklines if you are a pear shape - to show off that neat top half and create a nipped in waist. If you are more of an apple shape, choose a flattering bias cut which will show off those neat hips and great lengths. Pick a skirt length which ends at a slim part of your leg - for example, just below the knee is very flattering. Avoid dresses that end either above the knee or at the widest part of your calves, as they can be unflattering to all!


Look at bright colors this year - pinks, peaches and teal greens are all very fashionable, and embellishing is still a great look - pick an embellished dress which accentuates the areas you like best. Again, block colors are very trendy and also very slimming - pick the darker block on the biggest part of your body to balance it out.

In terms of stores to try for your Summer dresses, Dorothy Perkins goes right up to size 20 and has an excellent range of flattering Summer brights and dresses at great prices. For we plus size women, shopping for the perfect wedding dress can present a challenge. Truly though, most rules are the same for any woman.

The first, and most important tip is to begin your search six to nine months before your wedding day. It may take time to find the perfect dress and then you must allow more time for any alterations.

The second most important consideration is to set a budget. Don't forget about accessories!

When shopping, know what looks good for your figure. A-line dresses flatter most voluptuous figures, skimming over the hips. V-shaped necklines are flattering as well. Avoid full ballroom skirts and tea length dresses. The former may add more bulk to a round figure and the latter can make a curvy woman appear squatty.

Try on several gowns. A dress that appears unflattering on a hanger may very well be stunning on a body. Consider, also, the view from the back. This will be what your guests will mostly see. Think carefully before choosing a very long or large skirt. These can be cumbersome in small areas.

Will the gown you seek be for a winter or summer ceremony? Choose the fabric accordingly. For summer, go for light fabrics such as lace, chiffon or silk. For cooler weather months, consider brocades, velvet or satin. Will the wedding be formal, semi-formal or casual? Choose fabrics and dress styles accordingly.


Size does matter! Wedding dresses tend to run small. Always buy a dress in at least a size larger than you normally wear. This will allow for any weight gain and is easy to alter to fit as your big day draws near.

Be comfortable. You will be standing, sitting and dancing in your gown. If it is ill fitted or too tight, you'll be worrying with your dress and not enjoying your day. You can look beautiful without suffering for it!

Shopping for a dress does not need to be stressful. Take a few friends, who will also serve as advisors, and make a fun day of it.

Guess what though, that is all old news and you can now find trendy plus size wedding dresses easier than ever before. There are even some stores that specialize in the sizes from 16 up to 36. Plus many of the top designers have started to include a line of plus size dresses in their designs. There are even custom stores that will design a dress specifically for you and that is a great advantage because nobody else will ever wear the same dress as you. Many of these custom shops and designers can be found right online or you can visit them personally.

It is not necessary for you to hide your figure and there are even private consultants that will help you recognize what your top features are. Everybody has top features and it would be wrong for you to hide them. The wrong dress could make you look less beautiful than you are because it will show off the features you don't want to show off. The right dress will show off your best features and make everybody stop and say WOW!
